David R. McAllister, MD is Chief of Sports Medicine at UCLA and the Head Team Physician for the UCLA Athletic Department. He specializes in all areas of orthopedic sports medicine and has special expertise in ACL injuries as well as athletic knee injuries. He is an expert orthopedic surgeon and treats athletic injuries of the knee, shoulder, ankle and elbow. Dr. McAllister provides care to athletes of all skill levels including professional, collegiate, high school, and recreational athletes.

UCLA researchers team up with robot for solutions to debilitating knee injuries

The former automotive factory robot can simulate the extreme forces athletes’ joints endure

“Why do you need such a big robot?”

Bioengineering researcher Keith Markolf frequently gets this question when colleagues visiting from around the world first lay eyes on the 8-foot-tall, pumpkin-orange behemoth dominating the UCLA Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory at UCLA’s Rehabilitation Center. The industrial robot, diverted from a thankless job in an auto assembly plant in Detroit, has taken on a second life as an explorer into the workings of the human knee. Full Article >

TRAINEES

Dr. McAllister is responsible for teaching UCLA medical students and orthopedic surgery residents at UCLA Medical Centers. Dr. McAllister also serves as the program director of the sports medicine fellowship at UCLA which trains board eligible orthopedic surgeons to become sports medicine specialists.

One in five school-age children are obese, which raises their risk for diabetes, heart disease and other health problems. But many communities simply don’t have the resources to combat this public health epidemic.

Fortunately, a long-running UCLA program continues to help schools provide much-needed training and facilities for their students. The UCLA Health Sound Body Sound Mind program has installed fitness centers at more than 130 underserved middle schools and high schools in California, Colorado, Florida and Massachusetts.
